Leather Water Vapour Permeabiity

Textile Leather

This instrument is a professional laboratory testing device designed to measure the water vapour permeability or “breathability” of leather, textiles, and shoe components. It is used worldwide in quality control laboratories for footwear and personal protective equipment.

The device simulates the moisture balance in a shoe to determine how comfortable the material is for the wearer.

The leather sample is clamped across the mouth of a bottle which contains a solid desiccant, and is kept in a rapid current of air in a conditioned room. The air within the bottle is circulated by keeping the desiccant in motion. The bottle is weighed periodically to determine the mass of vapour transmitted through the leather and absorbed by the desiccant.
